Never trust the weather app

Today we attempted to wake up early for the full experience of a day at Udayan. The call to prayer from the local mosque managed to wake some of the group up at 5am, whilst others were woken to the pitter-patter of little feet around the building.

I’ve had worst Mondays

On our first night in India most of us had a long peaceful sleep, except from Miss Bowden… who was awoken in the night by a surprise visitor.* Miss Bowden’s day didn’t get any better when she arrived at breakfast to find out she was murdered. The first victim in our own version of BBC’s The Traitors.

Namaste from Udayan

And we’re off! Our journey to Udyan commenced in the early hours of Saturday morning. The journey was smooth – playing cards, shopping and bubble tea – right up until the point of the entry of Kolkata where we nearly lost a member of the team! A clerical error on their part with the visa application, but we managed to get across the border in the end!

The next adventure begins

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our ninth trip to Kolkata to visit Udayan. The group of ten students and two staff met at London Heathrow this morning all set for a life changing two weeks in the City of Joy visiting @udayankolkata

Welcome

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2024 Udayan blog as the group of 10 students prepare for the ninth mission to Udayan in February 2024.

Let’s hear a little more about Udayan from the students of the 2019 trip.

Day 9: Back To School

We visited a local girls’ school that doubled up as a Tardis – we were shocked by the sheer number of students in such a small facility with five to a bench, 75 in a room, and 1,800 students overall with just 30 full-time teachers teaching seven subjects: Bengali, English, Maths, Life Science, Physical Science, Geography and History.
