Service

Today was the day we started our service projects around Udayan. Our mission was to brighten up the place to match the smiles of the children of staff at Udayan. We had three main projects: decorating and sorting books in the library, adding murals to the walls painted last year and painting and labelling the campus’ tress. Miss Bowden had the ‘brilliant’ idea of also renovating the desks in the outdoor classrooms.

We were split into three groups combined with boys from Udayan who we think were on study leave. We hope the year 11s at JOA will be this proactive in the upkeep of the school when they start their GCSEs!

Udayan’s new Education Coordinator oversaw the sorting of the library books whilst we painted walls and windows. The tree group used white paint made from limestone to coat the bottom of the trunk of all the trees on site. This got a little messy. After painting the trees, we made plaques which displayed the Bengali, English and Scientific/Latin names. The art tutor drew some cute animals that we then painted on the pink walls. The boys tried to help us and even try to teach us the Bengali names. The group’s work ethic was high all day despite the heat. We got ahead of ourselves so were able start upcycling the old outdoor classroom bench-desks. We started sanding and priming ready for colour coats tomorrow.

These jobs took us all day and after getting cleaned up we were able to squeeze in a little dance rehearsal ahead of Wednesday’s Gala Night. This year the male house staff, female house staff, and teaching staff are all performing. The pressure is on, and we only have two more days to pull this together.

Let’s go!
