Touring Kolkata

On our last full day in ‘The City of Joy’, we ventured out on a short tour around Kolkata.

Starting the morning strong with a brisk walk through the flower market, twisting and turning through each tight path to find an array of beautiful colours. We exited to a sunny morning view of the Howrah Bridge stretching across the River Ganges.

Our second stop took us around a much more quaint area of handcrafted sculptures created using straw and clay from the River. As the festival season has not begun just yet, the small demand for these sculptures allowed for a relaxed look around.

Moving onto stop number three, we visited the Queen Victoria Memorial Museum garden, where the group was featured in many photos from the many Indian tourists, making us all feel as famous as Queen Victoria. Concluding our brief tour, we visited the University Cafe for yet another cup of coffee upon learning that the University of Kolkata is in fact the oldest in India.

In what could be described as the calm before the storm, we arrived back at our temporary home for the weekend for a hotel lunch before dashing off to the most anticipated part of our city trip. We split into three groups and approached the market. Each group being taken around by a trusted and experienced market guide, the chaos and excitement unleashed the inner hagglers within Lola and Evangeline, as they bravely bartered with the stall owners and lowered the price of their desired items.

After an eventful and eye-opening experience, we headed back to the hotel for a quick turnaround before going to the nearby 5-star hotel, “The Oberoi Grand” for a selection of bar snacks and lime and sodas.

Once again ending our evening with a round table meeting, the 6 final players – 5 of which were faithful – successfully voted out Amy as the last remaining traitor – The Faithfuls have won! Season 3 began immediately with the selection of our new traitors, although everyone will sleep well tonight as there will be no murders until we’re back at Udayan.

Off to bed early as the bus arrives at 5.15am to take us to the Mother House for mass with the sisters of Mother Teresa, the Missionaries of Charity.
